Aisha’s New Nose
If you’ve got your hands on the latest issue of Marie Claire you would have read the story of Aisha, an Afghan girl whose nose and ears were cut off by Taliban members when she tried to run away from her abusive husband. She was photographed by acclaimed South African photographer Jodi Bieber for Time magazine. The good news is that her story has a happy ending which only came about after we went to print (well as happy as anyone can be who’s been through such a horrifying experience). She was flown to America and underwent reconstructive surgery on her face and this month she had a prosthetic nose fitted as part of her eight month rehabilitation. Doctors are hoping for a more permament solution. The photograph of the noseless Aisha stirred up a lot of talk because of it’s disturbing nature. Check out the article in Time that investigates what the Taliban means to Afghan women and how they’re taking a stand here.
Aisha’s on her way to getting her face back – let’s hope that she’s never faced with the ordeals of her old life again. And that Afghan women can be protected from such atrocities.
