I went to Venice but didn’t ride a gondola

This is me in Venice next to a couple of gondolas. Why, you ask, am I not inside the gondola, listening to a tape-recorded version of ‘O Sole Mio’ and drifting under the Rialto bridge? That would be because, for a quick spin in one of these little boats of love, it costs 100 euros. That’s R1000. And I was much happier spending this money on a pair of drop-crotch denims and a nude pleated maxi skirt from Zara (which our MC fashion team is quite envious of I’m proud to say). I did however take another expensive boat trip in Venice – on the vaporetto (water taxi). Normally this costs six euros per ride, but because I was not savvy in the ways of vaporetto ticket buying, I was, to my horror, fined 50 euros! R500 that could’ve been spent on a gorgeous coral dress and charcoal boyfriend cardigan at Zara – alas, I had to leave these two items on their hangers. But aside from expensive boat rides, Venice (and Italy in general) truly is the land of pizzas, piazzas and perfect moments of doing nothing… Read the full report of my two-week holiday in Italy in an upcoming issue of Marie Claire.
