Check Into This Hotel

Great news for holidaymakers who want stylish yet affordable accommodation in Cape Town this summer: The Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge has undergone major renovations for an updated, sleek look that does justice to its beautiful location in the heart of the V&A Waterfront.

Previously a 19th Century industrial prison (although a bit creepy, you’ll be happy to know that it’s ghost-free), the hotel has retained its original castellated shell but now boasts an entirely transformed interior that oozes elegance and modern sophistication. It is this mix of old and new that I find particularly striking – contemporary, cutting-edge décor throughout the hotel is interspersed with preserved remnants of the historical building, such as prisoner wall etchings and punishment records.

Green fanatics will be pleased to know that the revamp also injected eco-friendly touches into the hotel, like reclaimed ‘wooden’ floors made from recycled car tyres in every room (talk about resourceful). Now, before you think that this upgrade also means an upgrade in prices, think again – Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge aims to still offer the affordable accommodation for which they are so well known and loved.
