Nominees for the Most Beautiful Object in SA 2012
Every year the Design Indaba shows us how much creative talent our country holds with its Most Beautiful Object in South Africa (MBOISA) Awards and this year, no less than three nominated items were created in the fashion industry. Design, art and fashion insiders are selected as judges to choose their pick of desirable that are made right here in South Africa. Blogger Milisuthando Bongela founder of MissMilliB and owner of the Johannesburg branch of MeMeMe, decided on the Suzaan Heyns leather fish scale dress. The garment is a sartorial work of art from Heyns’ 2012 Autumn Winter collection entitled True Colours and was featured in Marie Claire’s December 2011 shoot The World is Not Enough.
Editor of VISI Magazine and former Elle editor, Jacquie Myberg Chemaly nominated The Lilly Pad Ring by Kirsten Goss. This striking ring uses organic edges to encase a jewel and we simply love its proportions on the hand. While Kirsten may have launched her first store in London in 2002, she has since opened a state of the art studio in South Africa so you can be assured that you’re piece was proudly made on our shores. Here is Kirsten’s website with a list of stores and stockists.
Eric Loubser’s Bird Neckpiece is a statement necklace our team is lusting after, was added to the MBOISA list by Chris Roper Mail and Guardian’s Online Editor. On the magnificent piece Roper comments “The birds are alive, dark and yearning. It has a very modern whimsy, but a very Victorian heft. If you believe the body is art, this necklace is the frame that proves the truth.” Loubser’s work is available at Tinsel in Parkhurst Johannesburg and through his website, click here to see more nominees.
