Final week of my creative writing course

It’s quite cool to know I have something in common with Lord Byron – I recently read this quote by him: ‘If I don’t write to empty my mind, I go mad.’ Luckily, thanks to the Random House Struik/GetSmarter writing course that’s been keeping me occupied, I have been blissfully sane for 10 weeks running now. And for the next few (I’m aiming for five) months, I hope to be found in a position similar to the one above until I reach 80 000 words. At which point the threat of insanity returns.

The last week of the course has centred around how to write an effective query letter – since this letter can make or break your chances of getting published, the inside info on how to approach editors and agents is invaluable.

So what’s next? We’re all very sad to say goodbye to the course, so some students are signing up for Random House Struik’s ‘Write a Non-fiction Story’ course, which begins on 31 October and runs for 16 weeks. The course convener is author Mike Nicol, so students will be in good hands. Registration closes on 21 October, so if this sounds like something you’d like to do, visit www.getsmarter.co.za/random-house-struik-write-a-non-fiction-story-short-course

If you dream of writing a novel, you should do it.
