The rise and fall of Whitney Houston

The death of legendary singer, Whitney Houston, in her Beverly Hills’ hotel room on Saturday, sent shock waves through the music industry.

She burst onto the scene in 1985 with her self-titled debut album featuring “How Will I Know” and “Saving All My Love For You”. More than 10 million copies were sold in the US and more than 25 million copies were sold globally. The album also provided her with her first Grammy Award.

Her most commercially successful project was the 1992 film The Bodyguard. Besides starring in the film Houston also provided the soundtrack featuring a cover of the Dolly Parton song “I Will Always Love You”, a song most people will remember her by. Her most recent studio album, I Look To You, appeared in 2009 and also reached no. 1 on the US charts.

Her great success was a double-edged sword and lead to many obstacles. She carried the burdens of cocaine addiction and a toxic relationship with her estranged husband, Bobby Brown, for most of her adult life.
