Survivor SA: So few Average Joes

So, the contestants for the new Survivor SA Maldives were finally revealed last week and I must say, I’m not impressed. It is Celebs vs. Unknowns. I don’t understand why reality shows feel they have to rely on celebs to make their shows more interesting… can anyone say Celebrity Big Brother (and let’s not forget last year’s Celebrity Survivor, held on the island of Santa Carolina). I was very upset when I saw that only 10 ‘ordinary people’ got the chance to be on the show. I stood in line for 8 hours with thousands of other hopefuls at the Cape Town auditions – hoping and dreaming that I would get a chance to rough it out for a R1 million adventure. Little did we know that they already decided to have two teams on the show, one consisting of celebs and the other out of unknowns. Amongst the contestants are:

Celeb: Bonnie Henna, 31, actress (Invictus)

Unknown: Alison de Chazal, 53, mother

So by adding celebs to the already very small pool of hope, the average joes and janes stand little chance of being chosen. Why not have an all unknown cast again, don’t people want to watch ordinary people dealing with abnormal circumstances?

Survivor SA Maldives starts Thursday 24 February at 19h30 on MNet.
